    Evaluating interest

    Hi all

Would there be any interest in SQL Server-related community events run in Johannesburg? There aren't any serious plans made yet on format or anything else, so I'm very open to comments.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who works with SQL Server but isn't a member here, especially DBAs

Replies either to this thread, or to my mail address: gail@sqlinthewild.co.za

    Thanks very much.

    Most definitely!!!!

Why go against tradition when we can admit defeat, live in decline, be the victim of our own design?

    Re: Evaluating interest

    I'd be interested.

Turns out I don't know as much about SQL as I thought I did hehe

    Re: Evaluating interest

Excellent. I wasn't expecting so much interest. There are plans to get something like this going. I don't want to say any more right now, as it's still early days. Watch this space... Big Smile

In the meantime, since I have people's attention... What kind of topics would you like to see covered?

    Re: Evaluating interest

Personally I'd like to see SQL Server best practices from a developer's perspective. You covered quite a bit at Tech-Ed in terms of index and query optimisation and I think developers could do with guidance like that.

    Re: Evaluating interest

    Hi Gail,

I would personally like to see some tips on query optimisation, and maybe something along the lines of DBA related tips and techniques, as I have more than just a casual interest in this.

    Thanks,

I would like to know more about the actual mechanics of data access, e.g. the actual operations performed during query execution.  E.g. why does an update acquire a lock that blocks a read etc.

I know why in this case, but there's a whole lot I think a whole lot of us don't know.

Big Smile  I barely scratched the surfce at TechEd. I could probably have gone on for another hour or two on indexes alone.

Ok, so from what I'm reading so far:

    • Effective Indexing
    • Query optimisation
    • DBA 101
    • Locking in SQL Server
    • Steps in a query's execution

    Re: Evaluating interest

Let me know when or if you are going to make an appearance in Durban and maybe we can get you to do something down here as well

Great work and good luck with this
