East Rand Developer and DBA User Group (ERDDUG)

We're considering starting up a user group for the East Rand in Gauteng. This user group is focussed primarily on Microsoft technologies like .NET, XNA and SQL Server, but we're geeks so geeky computer things - including hardware geekery - are also more than welcome. Consider swinging around this side even if you're not on the East Rand - our cars won't bite you, promise ;-)

South African SQL Server Usergroup – October meeting

It’s our 1st birthday this month! There will be cake and prizes. I have three autographed SQL books and a backpack laptop bag to give away this month.

The meeting will be in the usual location – the Johannesburg Microsoft offices, 3012 William Nicol Drive, Bryanston. 18h30 on Tuesday the 20th October. I’ll be presenting a session entitled “Lies, damned lies and Statistics”. This session will also be presented in 4 weeks time at the PASS Summit in Seattle. Consider this a sneak preview.

Please let me know ASAP if you are coming. We need accurate attendance numbers or there won’t be enough cake.

The August meeting of the SA SQL Server usergroup will be on the 25th of August. Please note this is a week later than we would normally meet. The change in scheduling is due to some logistical problems (the conference rooms were booked). Venue and time are the same as always, 18h30 at the Microsoft offices

This month, James Pheiffer, who recently joined the Premier Field Engineers at Microsoft, will be presenting a session on Performance Monitoring using Perfmon and PSSDiag

We will have 2 session, one on Powershell and one on Auditing in SQL Server. Paul Filmalter will be doing the Powershell session and Paul Els the Auditing on SQL Server.

SQL Server usergroup - Feb meeting

The Feb meeting wll be held Tuesday the 17th Feb at 18h30 at the Microsoft offices in Bryanston.

Inus du Preez will be presenting a session "6 reasons why SQL Server 2008 must run on Windows Server 2008"

He's going to be covering improvements in Server 2008 such as network throughput, memory swapping, drive addressing and stability and why they make Server 2008 such a compelling platform for running SQL 2008 on.

He's also going to look at running SQL under Hyper-V and under the Core installation.

SQL Server Usergroup - november meeting

The November meeting of the SQL Usergroup (JHB) will be held on the 28th November (friday). Steve Simon, of State Street Corporation, New York, will be presenting a session titled "DTS 2000 migration to SSIS...makes financial sense !!"

While the migration of DTS 2000 packages to SSIS is relatively efficient utilizing the Package Migration Wizard, mutual fund and other financial packages are often more involved and thus require a bit more hands on effort. This "best practices", hands-on presentation will show the attendee the practices that we have implemented to convert our existing "far east" packages to run efficiently and effectively within the SQL Server 2005 environment. The discussion will also include ways and means that we have undertaken to reduce as many back end scripts as possible by replacing them with more Control and Data Flow objects.

I don't have a confirmed venue yet, but it should be the Microsoft office, Bryanston, 18h30. If those details change, I will post updates here.

Topic Overview

The .NET services bus is part of the new Microsoft Cloud Computing Windows Azure initiative, and arguably, it is the most accessible, ready to use, powerful, and needed piece. The service bus allows clients to connects to services across any machine, network, firewall, NAT, routers, load balancers, virtualization, IP and DNS as if they were part of the same local network, and doing all that without compromising on the programming model or security. The service bus also supports callbacks, event publishing, authentication and authorization and doing all that in a WCF-friendly manner.

This session will present the service bus programming model, how to configure and administer service bus solutions, working with the dedicated relay bindings including the available communication modes, relying on authentication in the cloud for local services and the various authentication options, and how to provide for end-to-end security through the relay service.

You will also see some advanced WCF programming techniques, original helper classes, productivity-enhancing utilities and tools, as well as discussion of design best practices and pitfalls.

Braai4Heritage

Braai4Heritage is an initiative that calls all South Africans to actively celebrate their common heritage by braaing on Heritage Day, 24 September.

When: 24th of September 2008 from 11h00 until 15h00
Where: Emmarentia Dam
Cost: Bring your own meat, salads and drinks.

Come celebrate being South African with SA Developer .NET around the dam. This is a bring and braai event. I'll be bringing my skottel like last year, if anyone prefers charcoal, feel free to bring your own.

Guys, what's with the asocial Jo'burg chapter? We're nearly half way through the year with no SADev events. I'm more than willing to give a talk, but will need people and a venue, the latter previously being organised by the leads. If necessary, I could try get something at my office, for a smallish number of people, but we haven't seen massive crowds anyway.
