    server behind a router

    Hello

We have a small company with 6 pcs which are rinning Windows XP, we are currently using a Router. They have just bought a server, Windows 2000 and they want internet access to be controlled from the server. How do i go about setting this up?

Thank you, your help will be greatly appreciated

    Hi there

What kind of access are you talking about? If it's time based access (i.e. the can only access the internet during set times), then these can normally be controlled on the router itself.

If you're talking about site based access (i.e. lock out porn sites), then you'll need another device (or a piece of software running on your server, with the servers IP address as the default getway instead of the router), that will filter out and block content. For an enterprise level company I'd suggest using something like web sense, but there are plenty of free linux based content filters for smaller companies.

Microsoft ISA Server is relatively user friendly to get setup: http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/default.mspx

Otherwise any box you can load Linux onto you can get a firewall onto. There is plenty for Linux, my choice is netfilters configured using Shorewall (http://www.shorewall.net/).

For a proxy there is Squid (for windows and linux) http://www.squid-cache.org/
