    Group Project

    Hi guys

been checking out this forum for a while but only registered today.   I've been coding since I was a kid but been earning a salary doing it since 96.
Mainly an asp.net developer...but enjoy doing some flash stuff too.

ANYWAY....Would any of you like to do a group project?

Maybe we could bash out some ideas.

I thought of creating some sort of social network ..for work.   Not like plaxo or linkedin ...but rather something that a company would use internally.
Like an intranet with functionality both productive and fun. ...

meh .. that's just one idea.  I'm sure we can come up with others.

    Re: Group Project

    Hi AppleMan,

how about a forum for the different departments to maybe post ideas, such as dev tips for the dev department, or marketing strategies for marketing, etc.

Almost similar to SADeveloper, but each section is a department, instead of C#, VB, etc.

Maybe with a central page for annoucements, newsflashes, etc?

    Ciao,

    Re: Group Project

Hi Horatio. That's a cool idea.

You know, it's a big problem in companies that people work independently of each other.  If everyone in the sales department(for example) could share their knowledge in a well designed intuitive environment, it would be quite useful.

It might be a forum, but could also be a sort of 'home page'  where everyone in a particular department is sharing articles bookmarks, contact information.

All the guys in the programming dept could log in to their 'home page' and see a collection of shared code snippets. ...for example.

     ALSO

A task management system could be useful
You could visit other peoples home pages (in the same company) and see what they are working on right now and what else they have in their todo list.

So many ideas ... but it really lends itself to a group project.  A bunch of us could code different portions of it. It could really be something great.

I'm sure there are many other ideas out there too.

    Re: Group Project

A group project sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately I don't have too much time available to contribute, but lemme know if you need some architecture/DB advice.

    Good ideas.

BTW, which language are you planning on using? Open source (PHP, MySQL etc) or .NET and MSSQL? I'm not too fluent in the open source stuff.

    Re: Group Project

I guess that would be determined by how many of us want to get involved and what environments most of us are comfortable with.

I'm an asp.net developer( VB or C# )...and I'm most comfortable with Microsoft sqlserver of anything similar.

I don't mind starting it off and designing the initial structure.

It would be nice to have a few more people involved but the two of us could start it off.

CraigN : you can look at what we're doing and chime in when you see fit.   Hell ...anyone on this forum could participate.

If we design it properly it could accomodate anyone writing an application plugin (like Facebook)

I cannot attach files here. Huh?

so screw the flow diagram...I'll just paste some rough ideas down here.

    Task Management
Tasks can be added and removed.
Categories can be created to organise tasks.
    Possibly keywords/tags
Time sheet system keeps time on tasks.

    Forum

    Discussion or chat rooms.
Certain discussions can be moved to the information archive

    information archive

    eg.
    Articles
    Websites
    Clipboards

    categories for different info
different user roles can be set up for different catigories

    staff interaction
    360 degree staff surveys
    mood indicator
    tests / surveys

    Admin Tools
Control panel to set up users.
    set up surveys
    see timesheets

That's cool.  As a group project, we can all jump in when and where we can.

I can provide web-space to publish the on going development .

I'm not fussed at this stage if it's a huge waste of time or not.   It will be fun and we'll all learn from each other too.  If it turns into something great ...cool.  If not...that's fine too.

What would you be conformable with at the moment ?  The user login system?  the forum (can be very basic to start with)
Or even if you only have time for contributing ideas etc.

    Re: Group Project

Oh I'm happy with anything you chuck in my direction...  Although I will say from (limited) experience that doing the login system last is always the best plan.  Less annoying if you don't have to log in until you NEED the functionality.  Or are you planning Windows Authentication?

    Re: Group Project

Not really planning anything.  Your input is as good as mine.  But for now lets say it will be a custom login system (which is more work in the short term but pays off eventually)

A system like this is all about the user and I would guess we would need a high degree of cutomisation down the line.

    What do you think?

I have an old forum lying around. (it's very simple but could be a good starting point).  It makes use of some nice classes which may provide the basis of some of the other ideas we might work on.

I'll try upload it later (assuming I can upload here)

    Hi R.A.M.

I can help you with the staff interaction stuff like the 360 degree staff surveys, as I was once responsible for writing a performance management application for a large firm. And I think the principles are basically the same. Just let me know how much into detail you want it to go, as these types of apps can get pretty large (think 5 months' worth of development with a 6 man team). I can also help with the timesheet aspect.

    Let me know,

    Re: Group Project

Agreed... I also built a 360 once and it was quite a large development.

Maybe we start out with something smaller.

I had an idea where someone (perhaps a manager or admin person) could set up a basic test.  (Question / multiple choice) .   The test would pop up on the home page of each user in a certain dept and prompt them to complete it.

Admin staff can analyse the test (reports/graphs etc)

    What do you think?

    Re: Group Project

    Sounds good.

For the reports I suggest we use something like SQL Reporting Services. I've had too many issues in the past trying to create my own report architecture, and SSRS is quite good.

Awsome.  That's something I have no experience with ....so you'll have to guide us.

At this stage I think we could start putting something together.

I don't know about you guys but something like this lends itself to object oriented development. It's no big deal if  some of us are not comfortable with that.  We can always mix and match.

     So...

    ME

    1.  handle the CSS and the style guide (if it's ok with you guys),
    2. set up some sort of login system that takes the user to their home page/control panel
I hear Kittens concerns about building that last to make development easier....but a well built cookie solution should take care of that.
    Horatio
    1. Tests/surveys
    2. SQL reporting services
    Kitten
    1. Maybe the information section....which probably needs a bit more discussion, but I guess it would essentially be a database with website links, articles, etc.

A user would have the ability to add information to certain user roles/groups.  Eg.  Someone finds an interesting article and adds it to the developer group.  This article then appears on the 'home page' of every one belonging to that group.
    CraigN
    1. Can check out what we're doing and give advice.

I suppose I need to get this started before we can really move forward.   I'll do my best to get something up during the week.
