    Phone Choice

So i am due for an upgrade really soon and cant decide on a phone so i thought u guys/girls might be able to help me out.

Basically my choices are down to the HTC Diamond , Samsung i900 and Erricson P1.

What i need to know is that is it possible to do some basic development on any of these phone , as that will be my deciding factor.

Also atm i am leaning towards the  P1 since it is the smallest with almost exaclty the same features as the others, i cant seem to find a i900 in SA so not sure if i will be able to get that and the HTC has major issues with it having really bad battery life and no flat back (meaning you cant use it on a table).

Any comments or suggestions welcome if you know of a phone similiar to these that can be used for dev :)

    Re: Phone Choice

First, are you absolutely 100% sure that you HAVE to do dev on your phone? It's been my experience that these PDA phones tend to be utter crud. You may be letting yourself in for a world of pain for a feature you never really use. Secondly, I have had the most vile service from Leaf (HTC's SA distributer), the HTC phones are useless, and MS Mobile is the worst phone OS ever. In other words, if you HAVE to have a PDA phone go for the Samsung or Ericsson.

    Re: Phone Choice

If I were you, if you can avoid it, avoid Samsung. Especially if you're going to development, Samsung's battery life is as bad as HTC. My brother had a D900i, and it lasted about 2 days on average use. His Nokia now lasts about 4 days. Rather go for the Ericsson then.

    Re: Phone Choice

Thanks for the replys guys , yeah i guess i really do want to do dev on my phone cos i spend approximately 2-3 hours a day on the road ,in that time i can finish alot of stuff. Yeah the samsung is still out of the question cos like i said i cant find the phone in SA and the HTC is the only phone that supports .Net , so i might just end up with that unless i can find a way to get the erricson to work the way i want , btw i do have a erricson atm and its my prefered choice.

    Re: Phone Choice

    Heya,

I have had a couple of Smartphones including the TyTn and TyTn II and think that they are awesome for what they are meant to do, except for the TyTn II's performance issues. What I don't understand is what you mean by performing development on these phones? Do you mean on the phone or for the phone? None of the devices mentioned are meant for developing on unless you simply edit text files or similar, but even then the display size does not really make it viable. You can look ast the HTC Shift and other UMPCs, but the dervices you mentioned wont do for development machines?

     Thanks,

    Re: Phone Choice

The Tytyn I's bluetooth support was so poor that ti couldn't be used as a car phone. Leaf had to replace mine with a downgrade. Nice thing about HTC is that when their phones stuff up, they give you a WORSE phone as a replacement.

    Re: Phone Choice

Lol dude i think you have just had the worse side of the HTC's , i know they give you problems but nothing like what you explained. Also the development i am talking about is not for the phone , its just general .Net dev. I have found a app that is pretty basic but will allow be to do this but its only a window mubile app :( .

I'm waiting for the iPhone... but for a lesson in team coordination, ask 3 different vodacom people when they expect the iPhone to arrive. You'll get more than 3 answers Stick out tongue

Probably not the best for .Net development (to be honest I haven't even tried to find out what development is possible on it) but I'm more into my J2ME anyway - and I'm fairly certain it'll support java...

Yeah, I've had 3 HTC's an I've sworn "never again". Maybe I've just been unlucky, but if so, so have a few of my friends. I have an HTC right now, am eagerly awaiting my upgrade so I can throw it against a wall. Very, very hard...

Lol , i await the day i make that much money that i can throw a phone or any electronic device against a wall and destroy it. But i have taken all the comments here into consideration and decided i will just get the P1 as i have personally seen the hell a HTC can give and am not willing to take that chance.

    Thanks all its much appreciated.

In my opinion you are a masochist for wanting to do anything like development work on a phone, so you may as well ignore advice and go for the most painful experience anyway. Stick out tongue
